Lima - Amid violent street protests, Peru's Congress on Thursday quashed opposition plans to force the government to hold a national referendum on whether President Alberto Fujimori can run for re-election in 2000.

The decision means Mr Fujimori faces almost no legal obstacles if he decides to run for re-election in 2000, political analysts say.
