Monrovia - Rebels have freed 21 UN peacekeepers held hostage in an eastern Sierra Leonean town, Liberia's President Charles Taylor said yesterday.

The peacekeepers had been held in Pendembu, where the rebels of the Revolutionary United Front are still detaining 222 other Indian peacekeepers and 11 military observers. The rebels are calling for the release of their leader, Foday Sankoh, being held at a secret location by the Sierra Leone government.
