Champions League review:Real Madrid took a giant step towards the knock-out stages of the Champions League after defeating AC Milan 2-0 thanks to two quickfire goals at the start of the match.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored from a free-kick in the 13th minute to put Jose Mourinho’s men ahead and moments later Madrid doubled their lead when Mesut Ozil’s shot was deflected in.

Milan could find no way back after as nine-times European champions Madrid, who could have won by a more handsome margin, made it three victories out of three in Group G to move onto nine points.

In the other Group Ggame, Demy De Zeeuw and Luis Suarez both hit fine goals as Ajax recorded their first win of the group stages despite playing over half an hour with 10 men against Auxerre in the Amsterdam Arena.

De Zeeuw and Suarez both scored in the first half as Ajax dominated, but following the sending-off of defender Andre Ooijer after the break the visitors pulled a goal back through Valter Birsa but could not find an equaliser.

Arsenal took control of Group Hwith a 5-1 romp against previously unbeaten Shakhtar Donetsk.

Cesc Fabregas scored a penalty on his return from injury, making it 3-0 after earlier strikes from Alex Song and the in-form Samir Nasri.

Jack Wilshere and Marouane Chamakh then completed the rout before Croatia striker Eduardo, sold by Arsenal during the summer, netted a fine consolation goal on the return to his former club with seven minutes left, which brought a round of applause from the home fans.

Goals from Rodrigo Lima and Matheus gave Braga the advantage over Partizan Belgrade in the race for third place in Group H with a 2-0 win.

Lima curled home a free-kick 10 minutes before the break and Matheus converted a close-range clincher in the last minute to give the hosts their first points of the competition and condemn Partizan to a third straight defeat.

Chelsea banished the memories of their 2008 Champions League final defeat in the Luzhniki Stadium with an impressive 2-0 victory over Spartak Moscow.

First-half goals from Yury Zhirkov and Nicolas Anelka gave Chelsea the momentum to secure a win that now puts them three points clear at the top of Group F.

The group’s other game saw Marseille earn their first points of the competition as they won 1-0 against MSK Zilina thanks to Souleymane Diawara’s goal early in the second half.

Bayern Munich were thankful for a pair of own goals as they maintained their perfect start in Champions League Group Ewith a 3-2 victory over Cluj at the Allianz Arena.

The result gave last season’s beaten finalists a firm grip over their section, however, they won with some fortune after falling behind to Cluj skipper Ricardo Cadu’s header after 27 minutes.

Cadu’s night turned sour soon after when he unluckily put the ball into his own net before Cristian Panin did the same six minutes later.

It proved the decisive period on a night when Cluj otherwise matched their hosts. Mario Gomez added a third for Bayern to render Juan Emmanuel Culio’s late strike a consolation effort.

Bayern now have a six-point cushion at the top of the group after Basle stunned Roma 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico. The Swiss side led through Alexander Frei’s 12th minute goal before Marco Borriello levelled.

But Samuel Inkoom had Basle back in front before half-time before Cabral sealed the win late on.
