The Labour Party leader Mr Pat Rabbitte has called on voters to register their disapproval with the Government by voting for his party's candidates in this Friday's local and European elections.

He also called for a No vote in the citizenship referendum.

Mr Rabbitte said he expected both of Labour's Dublin European candidates, sitting MEP Mr Proinsias DeRossa and Ms Ivana Bacik to be elected along with Mr Peter Cassells in the East constituency.

He said there was "real momentum" behind the Labour campaign and he said he hoped the electorate would punish the Fianna Fáil/PD government, which he said had misgoverned the country since the last election.

He said the public had raised the issue of abuse of power at local level and that  the Labour Party had a record of honest public service.

Mr Rabbitte also welcomed Mr Enda Kenny's call to his party's voters to give Fine Gael transfers to the Labour Party.

However, the Labour leader did not return the favour, saying only that he expected the electorate to vote against the 'awful parties in government' and that Fine Gael and the Green Party would be the main beneficiaries of such a vote.

Regarding the citizenship referendum, Mr Rabbitte said the Government was "putting the cart before the horse" and it had "not made a coherent case for a Yes vote".

He said the protection of civil rights in Ireland derived from the status of citizenship and recommended those who were not sure about how they would vote to vote No as the issue required more public debate.
