Northern Ireland's police service will play an historic first Gaelic football match against the Garda¿s GAA team later this year, it was confirmed tonight.

No date has been confirmed for the fixture, but a police service spokesman said the game would take place within the next few weeks.

Until last November, members of the security forces in Northern Ireland were banned from playing Gaelic games.

But the scrapping of the controversial Rule 21 combined with a 50:50 drive to recruit more Catholics paved the way for a club to be formed in the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
