Two men are being questioned tonight after a £1 million drugs seizure by police in the docks area of Belfast.

Cannabis inside three holdalls was found when officers intercepted a taxi and another car in a major undercover operation involving the PSNI’s organised crime branch.

Two men, aged 29 and 36, were detained when the two cars were stopped in the Duncrue area of the city’s docklands at lunchtime.

It was the second big drugs find in Northern Ireland this week.

Police said the arrests and seizure were not linked to the discovery of £500,000 of Ecstasy tablets on the North Coast on Monday when six men were held after officers raided a seafront flat in Portstewart, Co Derry.

But Chief Superintendent Roy McComb, head of the organised crime branch, said: “It indicates that organised criminals are intent on bringing misery in the form of illegal drugs into our communities. We are determined they will be stopped.”
