A major review of police patrols in Northern Ireland has been launched by the PSNI and the Policing Board, it was revealed tonight.

The `Best Value Review' will assess public expectations, visibility, tasking of patrolling and patrol strategy.

"It will consider how the police carry out the patrol function, compared with other police services and examine whether the service could be provided in an alternative way," the PSNI said in a statement.

The review is currently in its early stages and meetings are being planned with a number of groups representing the community, hard to reach groups, voluntary and statutory agencies.

The review team are inviting individuals and groups who have not yet been contacted directly to give their views.

"The review team would also be particularly interested to know if the public are satisfied with the current levels of police patrolling in their local areas," said the PSNI.
