Police in Northern Ireland are investigating an assault on a man on the Dublin to Belfast train last night.

The man (51) sustained a broken nose and head injuries and a PSNI spokeswoman said the incident was being treated as a hate crime.

She said the man was assaulted by a group of four men who shouted "homophobic" abuse during the incident.

Members of the group are also said to have broken the man's computer and taken an MP3 player and two sets of headphones.

The assault occurred while the train was travelling between Newry and Portadown at about 10.30pm.

The group of men got off the train at Portadown, the PSNI spokeswoman added.

Anyone who witnessed the assault is asked to contact the PSNI at Mahon Road station or the Crimestoppers charity.
