Protesting fishermen lift Rosslare blockade

Fishermen protesting at Rosslare Port in Co Wexford lifted their blockade of the port this afternoon.

Fishermen protesting at Rosslare Port in Co Wexford lifted their blockade of the port this afternoon.

The protest by scallop fishermen prevented three ferries from sailing from the port.

The two Stena Line vessels bound for Fishguard and one Irish Ferries ship to Pembroke were prevented from leaving after 11 fishermen used their trawlers to block the harbour, a spokesman for Rosslare Port said.

The blockade affected around 3,000 passengers and 400 lorries which were expected to come in and out of the port today, he said.

The protest started at around 8am this morning, and the three ships affected are the 8am and 9am sailings to Fishguard and the 8.45 to Pembroke.

In addition, a truck is blocking the road into the port preventing traffic getting in, he said.

A number of the Irish Ferries passengers due to sail from Rosslare have been diverted to Dublin, a spokeswoman for the company confirmed.

The fishermen are protesting against restrictions imposed on them by the Department for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources which limit them to fishing for eight days per month, starting from this month.

The department said due to new, larger fishing vessels entering the Irish scallop fleet in recent years, the available number of fishing days would not satisfy the expanded fleet without some restrictions.

A number of meetings between the department and the fishermen have failed to reach agreement over the issue.

Fisherman Eugene Bates said the group had met with the Minister of State for the Department of the Marine Pat the Cope Gallagaher a number of times over the last few months, but the meetings had come to nothing.
