The officer who was head of operations with the Irish contingent of EU monitoring soldiers in former Yugoslavia has been appointed Assistant Chief of Staff (ACS) of the Defence Forces.

The Minister for Defence, Mr Smith, has approved the promotion of Col Edmond Heskin (above) to the rank of Brigadier General on his appointment to the new post.

Brig Gen Heskin served for a year with the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) from 1995 to 1996. He had previously served three tours of duty with the UN in Lebanon and three in Cyprus. He is married with two daughters and a son.
