Britain's Prince Philip has entered the continuing dispute over genetically modified foods, and on the opposite side to his son, Prince Charles.

Prince Philip was quoted as saying at an engagement on Monday night that man had been tinkering with nature ever since he began selective breeding.

"What people forget is that the introduction of exotic species like, for instance, the grey squirrel into this country is going to do, or has done, far more damage than a genetically modified piece of potato."

Princess Anne also has little time for "green" voices, putting herself firmly in the pro-science camp. Last weekend she was quoted in the Grocer magazine as saying that those who were opposed to GM foods were guilty of a "huge simplification".
