The President, Mrs McAleese, is expected to leave hospital in Austria today after breaking an ankle during a skiing holiday.

Mrs McAleese had an accident on Christmas Eve in the ski resort of Bad Hafgastein, near Salzburg.

She was boarding a ski lift when she fell and she was taken to hospital locally.

A spokeswoman for the president said her schedule for the next few weeks would be restricted, and it was understood that her leg was likely to be in plaster for as long as six weeks.
