THE Interfaith Gold Medallion of the International Council of Christians and Jews was presented to the President, Mrs Robinson, at a ceremony yesterday in Dublin by the chairman of its executive committee, Sir Sigmund Sternberg, "in recognition of her outstanding contribution to interfaith understanding."

Sir Sigmund, the only Jew to have received a papal knighthood, spoke of the President's outstanding contribution to a collection of essays by world leaders, edited by Prof Hans Kung and entitled Yes To A Global Ethic.

This volume's theme was a plea for a consensus on ethical values among those of all religions and none.

Addressing a joint meeting of the Ireland Israel Friendship League and the Irish Council for Christians and Jews, Sir Sigmund focused on the process of peacemaking.
