Rio De Janeiro - University professors in some of Brazil's poorest states are taking home double the salary of the country's President, despite a constitutional cap on pay for public servants, a leading magazine reported yesterday.

Veja magazine, citing government figures, listed three teachers in the notoriously corrupt north-eastern states of Alagoas and Ceara who earned more than 17,000 reais ($10,000) a month, double the 8,500 reais ($5,000) earned by President Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
