Vatican City - Pope John Paul II called yesterday for Catholics to pray for the suffering peoples of Chechnya and Ivory Coast. The Pope made the appeal following the traditional Angelus service in St Peter's Square before thousands of worshippers.

"At this time, when the atmosphere of Christmas inspires mankind to become better and more fraternal, we should pray for the peoples who are living through so much suffering," he said.
