A Portlaoise man in his late 20s was killed in a construction accident yesterday afternoon at Tower Hill, Portlaoise, Co Laois.

Mr Richard Dwane died after part of the 250-year-old town wall collapsed where he was working on street and pavement improvement. He was brought to Portlaoise General Hospital, where he died shortly afterwards.

Mr Dwane, from Birch Grove, Knockmay, Portlaoise, is survived by his wife and their two sons.

He was an employee of C & M Construction, which was carrying out urban renewal work for Laois County Council near Tower Hill when the accident occurred.
