ESQUIPULAS - Pope John Paul II arrived here yesterday for an open air mass greeted by chants of "everyone loves you" from 200,000 people gathered in this pilgrimage town, where the 1980s Central American Peace Accords were signed in the town's basilica.

On arrival in Guatemala City on Monday, he called on Guatemalans to embrace reconciliation by formally ending their 35 year old civil war. The Pope was on the second day of a week's tour of three Central American countries and Venezuela, where President Rafael Caldera has pardoned 147 prisoners to mark the visit.
