Enda Kenny accuses protesters of ‘terrorising young families’

Ruth Coppinger claims Government trying to criminalise water protest movement

Socialist TD Ruth Coppinger accused the Government of trying to criminalise water charge protesters, while the Taoiseach said they were "terrorising young families".

Enda Kenny highlighted protests on Monday at the home of Fine Gael Meath West TD Ray Butler, and another incident at the home of Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe.

Ms Coppinger asked Mr Kenny to support demands for the release of protesters jailed for contempt, and said the Government was trying to “criminalise” the water charges movement.

The Dublin West TD asked how far was the Government willing to go in its “vain attempt to break the mass movement against water charges”. Mr Kenny said: “If you want political leadership then do not attempt to lead a mob.” Those in contempt of court “knew very well what they were doing”.
