Áine Lawlor and Finbar Furey receive Lord Mayor’s Awards

Broadcaster Áine Lawlor and folk and traditional musician Finbar Furey are among the recipients of the 2015 Lord Mayor's Awards for their contribution to the life of Dublin city.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Christy Burke has chosen four individuals and two organisations for this year's honours.

Former Dublin football All-Ireland winner and founding member of the Gaelic Players' Association Dessie Farrell and singer-songwriter Pete St John were also recognised for their contribution to the city, along with youth addiction service Hope (Hands on Peer Education) and homeless organisation Inner City Helping Homeless.

Speaking at the award ceremony in the Mansion House, Mr Burke said the individuals chosen deserved special thanks for their contribution to the sports, social and cultural life of Dublin, while the two groups had worked tirelessly to help those in need in their communities.

“It is an honour for me to recognise Pete, Áine, Dessie, Finbar, Hope and Inner City Helping Homeless with an award tonight. Their commitment and dedication to their work and their causes have, without doubt, enriched and enhanced the lives of the people of our city.

‘Remarkable contribution’

“This award is my way of thanking the recipients on my own behalf and on behalf of the people of Dublin for their remarkable contribution to our society.”

Since 1989 the annual award ceremony has honoured individuals and groups chosen by the lord mayor for their special contribution to Dublin.

Previous winners include singer Imelda May, writer Maeve Binchy, rugby player Brian O'Driscoll, sports broadcaster Jimmy Magee, Olympic gold medallist Ronnie Delany, astronaut Cdr Chris Hadfield, Dublin football manager Jim Gavin, broadcaster Marty Whelan, chief executive of Chernobyl Children International Adi Roche, as well as charities the Capuchin Day Centre, Merchant's Quay Ireland and St Andrew's Resource Centre.
