Rome - Italy's drive to reform its weak political system that has given it 55 governments since the Second World war appeared to have collapsed yesterday after politicians failed to agree on a last-ditch rescue.

Mr Franco Marini, leader of the centrist Popular Party, which is part of the ruling coalition, submitted a proposal to cancel a vote on what powers the president should have - the issue that has caused the reform process to grind slowly to a halt.
