Officers said they had thrown a security cordon around the campsite in the town of Stirling to protect public safety.

They were allowing protesters to come and go as long as they submitted to body searches. They said everything was quiet.

But protesters, who say there are upwards of 3,000 people inside the camp, insisted they were being kept in.

One camper, Deacon Dave Havard of the Church of England, claimed that protesters had been continuously harassed by police but denied that some of their activities had caused major disruptions for the public.

He said: "It's unfortunate if people were inconvenienced but what we're talking about is knowing people are starving around the world because of the G8."

Police said they made 91 arrests on Wednesday and seized several weapons including an axe, a machete and an high-powered catapult with ball-bearing ammunition.
