Police play tape of man being shot

A Belfast man was shot dead in Manchester as he made a 999 call to tell police he was being burgled. The tape of Patrick Logan's last minutes was played by Greater Manchester Police yesterday as a fresh appeal for witnesses into the shooting was launched.

Mr Logan, who was born in Belfast, was shot by a hooded gunman as he stood at the phone in his bedroom in Withington, Greater Manchester, early last Friday.

He is heard on the tape saying: "I've just been woken up. There's two . . . there's people down the stairs, we've been burgled." Mr Logan then broke off talking to the police operator and shrieked as the gun was pointed at him. Shots were heard on the tape and then there was a brief silence before Mr Logan's fiancee, Ms Susan Thompson, screamed. Mr Logan was shot four or five times at close range by the gunman. Police confirmed they were liaising with the Garda Siochana police in Ireland but were keeping an open mind on the motive for the shooting.
