Police in Derry came under petrol bomb attack early today as they attended disturbances in a loyalist estate.

Police in Derry came under petrol bomb attack early today as they attended disturbances in a loyalist estate.

At least 12 devices were thrown at officers as they responded to earlier petrol bomb attacks on homes in the mainly loyalist Fountain Estate.

There were no reports of any injuries although damage was caused to garden furniture in the earlier attacks.

Elsewhere, police were called out to deal with sectarian disturbances in the Cavehill and Westland Road areas of north Belfast.

A PSNI spokesman said a number of homes in the area had been attacked with stones and petrol bombs.
