GARDAI in Co Donegal seized more than 70 gallons of poitin and up to 500 gallons of the raw material used in the production process at the weekend. The find was made in a field in the small townland of Meenaward, some three miles north of Buncrana.
A Garda surveillance team had been watching the area for a few days before moving in to seize the illegal liquor, which is worth in the region of £15,000.
The hills of Donegal have always been famous for poitin-making and this seizure is one of several in the past few years.
A Garda spokesman has described the find as the most significant in the past 20 years.
