A PUBLIC debate has intensified about the lack of suitable playgrounds for children, following the news that plans are in train to recreate a Victorian garden in the woodland park adjoining Tramore House in Co Waterford.

A Playground Action Group in the seaside town is anxious that a playground be developed in part of the grounds, but council officials believe that this would not be compatible with the Victorian theme and might weaken the project's case for grant aid under the Great Gardens of Ireland scheme. Insurance difficulties following a proliferation of claims are another difficulty facing all councils in providing playgrounds.

The proposal to develop the Victorian garden, possibly with a maze, would cost around £100,000 and give the resort a unique and elegant additional attraction for visitors.
