The noted theoretical physicist, George Francis Fitzgerald, one of the most distinguished Irish scientists of the 19th century, has had a plaque erected in his honour at his former home at 7 Ely Place in Dublin. Born in 1851 he became a Trinity fellow at 26 and a professor at 30. He developed a mathematical theory which was a significant step towards Einstein's theory of relativity. He died in 1901 after an operation but, through the magic of relativity, he reappeared, looking remarkably like Trinity's Prof Denis Weaire, to unveil his own plaque.
