The ongoing water supply problems on the Aran island of Inis Oirr are to be alleviated by the provision of an additional water storage tank, which will hold one million gallons of water.

Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív yesterday announced that he had sanctioned a grant of €275,000 to install the additional water tank on the island.

The funding will be matched by €275,000 from Galway County Council.

This is the first step in the planned development of the water system on Inis Oirr, where water has been rationed for the past few weeks due to the continuing dry weather.
