The chief executive of the Jersey European airline has said the pilot of the aircraft which overshot the runway at Belfast City Airport on Wednesday night has been suspended, pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.

The 97 passengers and five crew on board the 5.40 p.m. flight from London had a narrow escape when the British Aerospace 146 Whisper Jet veered off the runway while landing in heavy rain. There were no reports of any injuries.

It is understood that among possible causes being investigated is whether water on the tarmac may have caused the aircraft to aquaplane.
