Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis was on the wrong end of one of the most stunning upsets in
tennis history at the Stella Artois Championship today.

Britain's Ian Flanagan, ranked 866th in the world, defeated the Australian in straight sets in the first round. The 22-year-old from St Asaph, north Wales, had never previously won a match on the ATP Tour.

But the qualifier played some superb tennis to win the match 7-6 7-6, clinching victory with a superb backhand return winner down the line.

"It is all about confidence, if you have a couple of good wins you think you can mix it with these guys," he said after coming through three matches in qualifying over the weekend.
