The death of a pensioner in Co Limerick almost three years ago has been upgraded to a murder inquiry.

The body of James Mulqueen (92) was discovered at his home at Kilmakeara, Kilcolman, Co Limerick, on October 23rd, 2009, after neighbours in the close-knit community noticed he had not left his house to collect his pension as was customary.

It was initially thought his death was due to natural causes. However, after a postmortem revealed some broken bones, gardaí began treating the death as suspicious.

The Garda Serious Crime Unit reviewed the case last month and investigating officers now believe Mr Mulqueen was murdered.
