Gardaí have appealed for witnesses after a man was knocked down and killed by a car in Co Donegal.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses after a man was knocked down and killed by a car in Co Donegal.

The pedestrian, in his early 20s, was struck by a vehicle which failed to stop at Tiernaleague in Carndonagh.

The road was sealed off for technical examinations and a postmortem is to be carried out at Letterkenny General Hospital by the deputy State pathologist.

Separately, gardaí named a man who died yesterday after a road crash in Limerick on New Year's Day as 25-year-old Noel Hayes from Shanagolden.

Mr Hayes was seriously injured when the car he was driving hit a ditch. He was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital and was pronounced dead yesterday.

A total of 240 people died on the State's roads in 2009 - 39 fewer than were killed in the previous year.
