Rome - The Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti (66) has won his latest bout with the Italian tax authorities, escaping a suspended jail sentence yesterday when an Italian court threw out a claim for more than €20 million in back tax.

The prosecutor, Mr Manfredi Luongo, had requested an 18-month suspended jail sentence but the judge at the court in the tenor's home town of Modena acquitted him.
