Paramilitary "punishment" attacks in the North are at their highest level than at any time in the past two years, according to figures released by the RUC. There was a massive rise in attacks last month. Forty-one people were injured, more than double the number in any of the previous six months.

Twelve people were shot - seven by loyalists and five by republicans - and 29 were beaten - 17 by loyalists and 12 by republicans.

There were two "punishment" attacks on Tuesday night. A 44-year-old man is "ill but stable" after being shot in the stomach at his home in the nationalist Carrowshee Estate, Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh.
