A Co Down lorry-driver who was paralysed from the waist down after an accident while working in Co Monaghan was awarded £540,000 compensation yesterday.

Mr Geoffrey Coey (39), from Oakdale, Ballygowan, was on top of a pressurised feed-stuff lorry when a metal cover blew off. The accident happened at Milltown Mills, Monaghan, in April 1995. Mr Coey sued his former employer, Irish Feeds Ltd, Sinclair Wharf, Belfast, in the High Court in Belfast. The action was settled out of court.
