Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader, the Rev Ian Paisley has warned the Taoiseach not to get involved in Northern Ireland matters, following Mr Ahern's comments in the Dáil about the upcoming marching season.

Speaking after "brutally frank" talks with Mr Ahern in London, Dr Paisley said: "I did say that I didn't want the Taoiseach to put his dirty hands on internal Northern Irish matters and I said it to his face."

He warned that any attempt by the Parades Commission to halt a planned march in Belfast on July 1st could lead to trouble. The Orange Order is refusing to hold direct talks with residents in Derry where the parade is planned.

"They don't need to tell our people to be calm, because they have been calm and they are calm," he said. "But if the procedures are directly showing that there is bias by the Commission against the majority section of the community, there will be trouble.

"If they attempt to stop the parade that has been going on for years in East Belfast on July 1st, they are absolute fools and they want to have trouble.

They are the troublemakers, not the Orangemen."

Mr Ahern said that he had merely expressed the hope that the Orange Order would organise the upcoming parade in Derry in the same way that the Apprentice Boys have done in previous years.

"We just want to get safely through the parade period," he said. "I don't see how anyone could take offence if they want to see peaceful parades."

Speaking in the Dail yesterday Mr Ahern said the marching season would be crucial and that all political leaders would need to work together to ensure they passed off peacefully.

He said there was not going to be any movement on Drumcree this year and that Ardoyne, north Belfast continued to be at the "kernel of difficulties".

A delegation from the DUP is expected to meet Northern Ireland minister Shaun Woodward tomorrow to discuss their concerns about the Parades Commission.
