THE SEVENTH Jameson Dublin International Film Festival kicked off last night at the Savoy Cinema with a gala screening of the heavily Oscar-nominated drama Doubt.

Earlier, a Volta award – the festival’s lifetime achievement prize – was presented to Thierry Fremaux, artistic director of the Cannes Film Festival since 2007.

John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt, which is nominated for four acting Oscars, stars Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

It is just one of 132 films being screened at the festival.

Highlights include Laurent Cantet’s The Class, a stunning neo-realist drama that won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2008, an early outing for Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino, a screening of the Swedish vampire masterpiece Let The Right OneIn and tonight, Armando Iannucci’s In the Loop.
