Earlier today the search team picked up a survivor who had spent more than 12 hours in the icy water.

A spokesman for the RAF said the man was spotted by a Nimrod helicopter from RAF Kinloss around 12.15 p.m. An Irish search and rescue helicopter assisted in the rescue operation.

The alarm was raised last night when the German-registered trawler Hansasent a distress signal 240 miles west of Tiree in the Western Isles, 180 miles from the Donegal coast.

RAF spokesman Michael Mulford described the latest rescueas "miraculous".

Sixteen people - a German and 15 Spaniards - were on board. It had originally sailed from the Spanish port of La Coruna.
