Up to one million Christmas cards and letters not yet delivered are due to reach letterboxes today and tomorrow.
An Post blamed the delays on a 5 per cent increase in volume and changes in processing systems.
Most of the undelivered post had been sent to addresses in the Dublin area, where an automated sorting system was introduced six weeks ago.
The company said that all the outstanding mail should be delivered today or tomorrow.
