Newcastle veterans Gary Speed and Alan Shearer teamed up to fire their side to an eighth successive Premiership victory at St James' Park.

The Welshman opened the scoring with 17 minutes gone and the former England skipper made it 2-0 on 58 minutes, but a 73rd-minute own goal by substitute Nikos Dabizas ensured a tense finish.

But it was Sheringham who had an almost immediate impact when he sent in a 73rd-minute cross which Dabizas, just moments after receiving treatment for an injury, spectacularly headed into his own net to give the visitors hope.

Shearer should have restored his side's two-goal advantage four minutes alter when LuaLua's cross was allowed to reach him at the far post, but he uncharacteristically blazed his shot wide with just Keller to beat.

Spurs were enjoying the better of the latter stages as United started to get nervous, but Robson's rearguard, ably assisted by a mature display by Jenas in front of them, held firm.
