Offaly is about to prepare a plan which will determine what heritage is to be preserved in the county over the next five years.

Submissions are being invited from the public on the items they feel should be protected.

These could include monuments, archaeological objects, flora, fauna, landscapes, wildlife habitats, parks or inland waterways.

"The heritage plan is an opportunity to recognise and acknowledge the presence of heritage all around us, rather than viewing it as something to be visited on holidays or at weekends," according to Ms Amanda Pedlow, the county's heritage officer.

The Offaly Heritage Forum, which is representative of Teagasc, Bord na Mona, Coillte, Birdwatch Ireland, Duchas and the local authority, will consider all submissions and form policies accordingly.

Submissions should be sent to the Heritage Office of Offaly County Council in Tullamore by May 4th.
