Celtic manager Martin O'Neill admits he would have a better chance of attracting the world's best stars if the Glasgow giants played in the English Premiership.

The Parkhead club's flirtation with the Champions League and their plucky UEFA Cup exit to Valencia has whetted the appetites of everybody at Parkhead.

But the Irishman believes the club's proposed move south must become reality if they are to become a major force in European football again.

"Manchester United, Liverpool and those sides at this minute are very big sides, there's no doubt about it," said O'Neill.

"But Celtic and Rangers would cope admirably even if they were put in immediately and in time they would have the resources to do well.

"If Celtic and Rangers were playing in a stronger league I have no doubt that we would attract the top-quality players without much trouble.

"If we can attract some decent players to the football club playing in a supposed lesser league than the English Premiership, God knows what we would attract after nights like Valencia."
