A nun was shot in the neck and wounded as she walked down a busy street in central Rome yesterday, police said.

Sister Lucia Sonnetti (62) was in the tourist neighbourhood of Trastevere when she was struck by the bullet, which eventually lodged near her left lung. The angle of the shot suggested it was fired from above, police said.

The nun told police she heard a crack and moments later a sharp pain. She walked to her nearby convent and was taken to hospital. Police said she would need surgery but her injuries were not serious. There are no suspects.
