Last month was the sunniest November on record in Dublin, Cork and Birr, Co Offaly, Met Eireann revealed today despite the entire country getting more rain than normal.

There was little or no rain in the first week but after that almost all parts of the country saw some wet weather every day.

It wasn't all grey skies, however, as sunshine totals were well above normal with Dublin recording about nine hours of sunshine on the first of the month — its highest November daily value on record and the highest anywhere since 1968.

The bright weather followed the warmest October for five years.

And meteorologists also noted average air temperatures for the month were around one degree higher than normal, despite a relatively cold first week.

One of the wettest days was the 15th which saw 40.6mm of rainfall in Kilkenny, its highest daily fall on record for November.
