NOTW to charge for online access

Britain’s best-selling Sunday newspaper will start charging its readers for online access next month.

Britain’s best-selling Sunday newspaper will start charging its readers for online access next month.

The News of the World is following its sister papers, the Times and Sunday Times, in launching a paywall for its website.

The tabloid, which is redesigning www.notw.co.uk, will charge £1 for a day's access or £1.99 for a four-week subscription.

Other media organisations bidding to increase online profits are closely monitoring News International's conversion to paid-for digital content across its stable of titles.

Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International, said: "The News of the World website will be the third of our titles to launch a paid-for digital proposition in under four months.

"News International is leading the industry by delivering on its commitment to develop new ways of making the business of news an economically exciting proposition."

News of the World editor Colin Myler said it was a significant moment in the history of the newspaper.

Registered customers will be given an introductory offer at launch, the newspaper group said.

A new iPad app is also due to be released, with a separate weekly charge of £1.19.
