Nine people were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after a disturbance at an immigration detention centre in Oxfordshire, the Home Office said  today.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to Campsfield House Immigration Removal Centre following a disturbance at 6.30am.

Seven immigration staff and two inmates were taken to hospital.

The centre, around five miles north of Oxford, holds 196 male inmates awaiting deportation.
