Night-club faces closure following endorsements

A night-club faces closure after receiving four endorsements on its licence yesterday

A night-club faces closure after receiving four endorsements on its licence yesterday. The owners of Shafts, Ely Place, Dublin, were also fined £2,500 for having people on the premises after hours on four occasions between September and December last.

Dublin District Court heard the company involved, Moyfield Ltd, already had 29 previous convictions and one live endorsement for breaches of licensing laws.

It would be required to close after three endorsements but Judge William Earley set independent bail for an appeal at £4,000.

The court was told that a new company, Lacehane Ltd, was seeking to take over the night-club but Insp Eddie Finucane said there would be "very serious" Garda objections to transfer of the restaurant and dancing licence.

Sgt Noel Mostyn said there were 300 people on the premises at 2.12 a.m. on December 1st.

Thirty-five were drinking wine or Ritz while most were drinking water and there were 100 people dancing.

On that occasion a bottle was thrown at him and a person was arrested under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Judge William Earley also fined the manager, Mr Derry O'Sullivan, £200 and set November 20th to hear Garda objections to the licence transfer.
