Niamey - The people of Niger voted yesterday to end military rule and put democracy back on track after the assassination of the West African country's elected president, but the turnout was low, officials said.

A successful transition to democracy will unblock foreign aid frozen by Western donors angered by last April's coup led by the military ruler, Maj Dauda Mallam Wanke, in which President Ibrahim Bare Mainassara was killed.
