Three Northern Ireland men who absconded from an open Dublin prison in a stolen car received consecutive sentences yesterday. Barry McCrory (20), Moss Park, Derry, pleaded guilty to the unauthorised taking of a Vauxhall Astra, while Anthony Sheerin (20), Leenan Gardens, Derry, and Patrick Ward (21), Station Road, Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, admitted allowing themselves to be carried.

Dublin District Court was told the defendants were serving sentences of between two and six months when they decided to abscond from Shanganagh prison and return North. They were stopped on the Navan Road at Castleknock on June 14th. The car was stolen earlier in Gorey, Co Wexford.

Judge Gerard Haughton jailed Ward for eight months and Sheerin and McCrory each for six months, all terms to run consecutively to the sentences they are already serving. He also disqualified McCrory from driving for one year and banned the two others for five years.
