A new research and study centre, which will provide a permanent base for archaeological and ecological research of international significance, has been opened in Co Mayo by the Minister for Science, Technology and Commerce, Mr Treacy.

The facility within the village community of Belderrig will complement the Ceide Fields interpretative centre in the area and focus on long-term relationships between people, climate and land.

Mr Treacy said at the opening yesterday he was not aware of any other area of comparable size to Belderrig which had combined the elements of community, science and technology so well.
