Former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu will serve as worldwide strategy advisor to BIO-key International, a high-tech firm specializing in finger identification techonology, the company announced.

The company, based in the northern US state of Minnesota, is a biometric information technology security company that develops and licenses security solutions utilizing biometric finger identification technology.

"Mr Netanyahu's expertise in security issues, fighting terrorism and international business will greatly assist BIO-key in positioning and deploying its biometric technology," the firm said in a statement.

Mr Netanyahu served as Israel's prime minister from 1996 to 1999, with prior stints as Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, deputy chief of mission in Israel's embassy in Washington, and as an officer in Israel's elite commando unit.

He is a graduate of the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"The tragic events of September 11th have brought about a heightened awareness for how biometrics can contribute to a more secure environment for all of us," Mr Netanyahu was quoted as saying in the statement.

The BIO-key technology could be used in airports and other public transportation facilities to identify passengers, by credit card companies to identify cardholders, as well as to secure corporate computer networks.
